Prevention of Bathtub Related Accidents

Falls are the leading cause of bathtub related accidents followed by burns and scalds. Yearly, more than 3000 children of less than 4 years of age are hurt by hot water burns. Some dos and don'ts to ensure bathtub safety of your child:

  • Never leave young children alone in the bathtub, or even with young siblings, to attend to a doorbell or phone. Remember, drowning is permanent and cannot be reversed
  • Collect soap, diapers, towels and other items, prior to running water in the tub, and keep them near at hand.
  • Check the water temperature in the bathtub before putting your child in.
  • Metal spouts and faucets could harm your child. Padded safety covers are available to cover the faucets.
  • Electric items like razors, curlers and hair dryers should be kept away from the bathtub.

Bathtub safety does not apply only to children. The elderly and unwell are equally prone to accidents in the bathtub. Many safety items are available. Ensure rubber mats or non-slip pads are placed in and around the tub. Bathtub safety rails and tub safety handles can be fixed to your bathtub.

Remember, nothing should override the bath tub safety of your family.
